For over a decade, the very popular northern African country, Egypt, has struggled with providing enough adequate drinking water to the country’s residents. They have also endured many problems in the attempt to improve their water system, in their efforts to provide a clean source of clean drinking water, as well as proper sanitation facilities.
In their attempt to fix the problem at hand, it is unfortunate that their water shortage problem is now becoming more severe, as the UN has already declared the future water status of Egypt.
The UN has stated that the desert-like country will run out of water by the year 2025, which is a very serious statement to make, and most definitely has the country in a panic.
What do we know about the water scarcity problem in Egypt?
- 95% of residents in Egypt lives within ten miles from the primary source of water in the country, the Nile River. It is due to the rest of the country’s layout being more desert than anything else. Since Egypt mainly controls the river, at least 90% thereof, it is indeed their fault that the entire country faces the problem, which is water scarcity.
- The country is currently suffering from extreme water scarcity, with only 20 cubic meters reserved per person.
- Living so densely populated on and around the Nile River, the primary cause of pollution is the people that surround it. Most pollution is caused as a result of industrial and municipal waste.
- Egypt consists of over 90% of desert land and only 6% of arable land, which can be used for agriculture. Due to these conditions, the nation only receives 80mm of rainfall per year.
- Water prices have increased as the water crisis continues to increase in Egypt. It means that the less income a household has, the more they will struggle to afford water.
