According to the British Government, tap water in the UK is perfectly trustworthy and 94% of the population are satisfied with their water supply.

I am not too sure where they get that figure from, seeing that more and more individuals are complaining about the smell and taste of their tap water, and water cooler sales have escalated year on year in the UK, but I guess if the government say so, then that must be so.

Tap water in the UK is subject to stringent standards, and chlorine is added to the water as a disinfectant ate very low levels, as per WHO maximum guidelines to combat waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhus, and hepatitis A. Fluoride is also added to the water in certain areas in an attempt to combat tooth decay, especially in children, in those who cannot afford decent medical or dental care.

WaterUK says that “Millions of tests are conducted annually to guarantee the best possible quality of water for consumers,” and “All public water supplies are regularly tested in England and Wales and the results which are published and available to every consumer on request show that tap water is safe to drink and there is no need to install additional treatment within the home as a health protection measure.”

For some of us though, the fact that chlorine and fluoride has been added to the tap water certainly does not thrill us. I can definitely smell the fluoride so do not drink tap water at all. While the powers that be insist that the low levels used in UK drinking water make the tap water safe to drink, I am inclined to rather listen to a myriad of scientists who say that chlorine by-products and fluoride in the tap water are carcinogenic.
