Hitting the Atlantic, Hurricane Maria is known as a natural disaster that hit Puerto Rico on the 19th of September 2017. Although Puerto Rico was the main island affected by this tragedy, Dominica was also affected. This hurricane was recorded to be the most intense cyclone in the world in the year 2017. The hurricane was listed as a Category 5 hurricane and recognized as the deadliest storm of the hurricane season.

Hurricane Maria, Disaster Striking Puerto Rico

Causing disaster all over Puerto Rico, the hurricane left most of the island without power and without drinkable water. Many homes were also destroyed and many families all over the island were lost. The hurricane also caused severe damage and many deaths in the north-eastern part of the Caribbean, which was already trying to recover from Hurricane Irma, a hurricane that hit the Caribbean before Maria hit Puerto Rico. Maria was thus the third hurricane to hit the islands of Leeward in as little as two weeks following the first which was Hurricane Jose, then Irma.

Hurricane Maria first originated from a wave and then turned into a tropical wave, which was furthermore affected by environmental conditions that allowed it to experience explosive intensifications before it reached Puerto Rico.

The hurricane created strong winds of about 280 kilometres per hour and a pressure of 908 m-bar, which caused the intensity of the Atlantic hurricane to break records and cause one of the worst hurricanes in history.

The Death Toll in Puerto Rico

A ‘hurricane’ is a term used to describe a storm at its worst and that’s exactly what Maria was. Hurricane Maria caused devastation on the entire island and affected every person living in Puerto Rico. 112 people were confirmed dead after the hurricane, which included 64 deceased in Puerto Rico and 31 in Dominica, as well as a few in the Dominican Republic, the U.S., Haiti, Guadeloupe and The U.S. Virgin Islands. Hundreds more, mostly Dominican and Puerto Rican are still considered missing and might also have lost their lives at sea.

While a disaster like this cannot be prevented, it has saddened the hearts of many. The only closure that can be found is in the hope that it won’t happen again.
