In this day and age, I believe it is safe to say that we are all aware of the fact that each and every one of us needs to save as much water as possible in any way and wherever we can find the opportunity to do so.

One of the most significant areas in which we are able to conserve water is in our gardens; by growing in a slightly different manner and practising efficient watering techniques, we are able to save hundreds, if not thousands, of litres of water each and every single month.

Which factors influence the amount of water a plant takes in?

There are many different things that can influence the amount of water that plants use, such as the use of fertiliser, which encourages development and leads to an increase in the amount of water that plants require in areas such as fruit and vegetable gardens, trees, ornamental shrubs, and lawns.

Landscapes that have recently undergone pruning have a greater demand for water. This is because pruning encourages new growth, which in turn results in a higher demand for water. Plants that are blossoming and trees that are bearing fruit have a greater requirement for water.

To help you reduce the amount of water your plants use, here are some simple tips:

  • Always check to see that the blades on your lawnmower are sharp; tidier cuts result in a less amount of water loss;
  • Avoid watering the lawn or garden too much;
  • Selecting smaller plants that require less water will save you money in the long run.
  • Reduce the amount of fertiliser you use and just apply as much as is required to keep your plants in good health;
  • Do not squander water on plants that are either unhealthy or unwanted; pull out the plants you do not want and replace them with healthier versions of the ones you do want in your garden but that are sick.
  • To keep moisture in the soil and to prevent weed growth, mulch the space surrounding your plants.
  • When creating your garden, give preference to species that are native to the area and require little water;
  • Mowing your lawn at a high height and more frequently can encourage the grass to establish deeper root systems.
  • You should perform regular weeding in your garden to prevent undesirable plants from stealing water that could be used by other, more desirable plants.
  • When watering plants with an irrigation system, it is best to employ a zoning system, which groups plants according to the amount of water they require and the type of soil they are growing in;

You should water the areas that you can by hand with a hose or a watering can, and if you must use a sprinkler, you should avoid doing so during the hottest part of the day or when the wind is blowing, and you should check to see that the sprinkler is watering the plants and the lawn and not the pathways or the street.
