Amazing things that happen during winterThe white roads, thin trees and freezing weather tells us winter has come. Blankets and hot drinks are used in excess. Of course, this also means exciting holiday times, like Christmas and New Year’s, which we group under the festive season or special times that happen after, like Valentine’s Day or Easter. During this time, remarkable things happen to cities, people, nature, animals and all sorts of areas as adjustments are made to the sudden drop in temperature.

Charities take advantage of the cold weather to try raise awareness of their campaigns. For example, the Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association hosts the Polar Bear Water Ski Event in St. Louis. They’ve managed to raise as much as $91,000.

Keeping up with this swimming in icy waters theme, Beijing’s winter swimmers are diving through icy waters in an unfrozen natural lake. One swimmer, Zhang Jingzhong, who has been swimming in icy waters for more than a decade, claims that it is an excellent stress reliever.

Yet, one doesn’t need to take part in such extravagant activities to enjoy winter. Indoors, this is a time to focus on aspects at home that can be improved. For example, our houses are never perfect and could always use improvements. This can be a time to improve it, especially in a time when we’re all going to be indoors much more, due to the cold outside.

Further, winter allows for activities that do not and did not exist before. For example, ice-skating – both in amateur and professional capacity – becomes available, due to the drop in temperature. This is a good way to still exercise, get outdoors and stay active, using the weather to your advantage.

Similarly, we can finally catch up with various things like films, books and television, since we are “trapped” at home. Many of us can use the excuse to be hermits to, for example, become more creative and write that book we all believe will win us the Nobel prize.

We shouldn’t let weather dictate our sense of fun and joy. That even major sporting events, that are aimed at charity and so forth, still occur is an encouraging thought.

There are plenty of activities. Yet, while performing them, we mustn’t forget we still should care for our health and hygiene. Staying hydrated, fit and eating healthily is still essential to living a good life. This makes us able to enjoy the activities that come up during these cold months.

Don’t let the cold stop you: stay hydrated, stay active and enjoy what’s out there.
