The human body is made up of around 70% water, and it is vital for our good health that this balance is maintained. Because the body cannot store water and loses water throughout the day, it is important that we drink water throughout the day to replenish.

Water is vital for regulating and maintaining core body temperature, metabolising nutrients, maintaining electrolyte balance, help you control your weight, keep the skin soft and supple, keep joints and the brain cushioned from impact, and keep joints lubricated so that they can move easily. Muscles also need water in order to grow and perform at their best.

While 80% of your hydration should come from drinking water, the rest can come from consuming water-rich foods:

  • Fruit such as blueberries, apples, Watermelon, Star fruit, Strawberries, Grapefruit, cantaloupe, and oranges contain 85% or more water as well as fibre and are great for losing weight as well as being refreshing snacks that can quench your thirst between meals.
  • Lean Proteins such as fish, shellfish, lean beef, turkey breast, skinless chicken and tofu are high in both water and protein. Shrimp is around 78% water, turkey breast is 70% water, and firm tofu is around 85 % water by weight.
  • Low-Fat Dairy Products such as yoghurt and cottage cheese, are rich in water. Fat-free plain yoghurt is 85% water by weight, and cottage cheese is around 81% water. Add to your breakfast or have as a snack.
  • Non-Starchy Vegetables are low-calorie, high-fibre and water-rich. Veggies such as lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes are more than 90% water. Fresh spinach leaves, celery, broccoli and cauliflower florets are also high in water content. The water content of starchy vegetables is slightly lower; potatoes are 79% water by weight, and raw corn is 76% water.
  • Soups consist mainly of water and regular consumption of clear or broth-based soups can add to your body’s water content and also help you control your weight.

The best way to ensure that your body stays hydrated and healthy is to ensure that you are drinking sufficient water throughout the day. The best way to ensure that the water that you are drinking is pure is to invest in a water cooler with a good water filter that filters all toxins out long before the water reaches your glass.
