Sometimes when nature takes its course, marine animals get washed out on beaches across the globe. Recently, New Zealand and Australia have been highlighted in the news, due to large numbers of whales that randomly washed ashore, both dead and alive.

While it’s fun to go fishing and there’s nothing quite like that perfect catch of fish, there are instances when fish itself can become toxic, especially the big ones.

Consuming Sea Creatures that Wash Up on Shores, are Becoming a Major Health Issue

You’d think that people wouldn’t be crazy enough to consume just anything that washes up ashore, but that’s not true and it’s a difficult issue to control for governments in all corners of the world.

Increased human populations demand more food, and in some locations probably more than their governments can provide them with or that they can afford. That’s one reason why people rush to the beach when a sea species, including whales, seals, sea turtles, cru-stations, and dolphins wash out ashore.

In underdeveloped countries, food is food, but since it is not checked before people consume it, it can become toxic and make people sick or lead to fatalities.

Whales, for instance, wash up due to being unable to divert themselves away from the shore. Either that, or they die due to becoming ill in some way. When whales and dolphins wash ashore, the possibility of them being filled with marine toxins and pollutants, are extremely high. This could also be due to plastic that has built up inside of them or by ingesting toxic algae.

In 2018, seven children became sick and died due to eating a dead sea turtle in Madagascar, which gave the people on the island a wake-up call.

People have been consuming dead marine mammals that have been washed ashore for centuries. Nevertheless, it’s not safe, especially not in the current century, where sea mammals can easily get affected by pollution or other toxic substances and chemicals in the oceans. Climate change also remains a contributing factor to turning algae toxic, which enters marine mammals’ bodies, causing them to become toxic. Unless marine mammals have been cleared as adequate to consume, they should not be consumed whatsoever.
