In addition to dozens of other African countries, this one is facing extreme water shortages, along with a severe lack of clean drinking water and persisting poor sanitation.

Located in Africa’s horn, Ethiopia has many factors contributing to its water scarcity problem, which includes its location that is driven by either poor politics or drought. These are, in fact, the two biggest contributions of water shortages within the country.

Some of the Most Shocking Numbers in Africa

42% of the Ethiopian population currently doesn’t have access to clean water supply of any means, while only 11% of the population has access to proper sanitation. Ethiopia is thus, considered an extreme water scarce country, hence the reason why it is susceptible to the outbreak of illnesses and has so many fatalities annually.

The problem surrounding inadequate water supply or water scarcity, have both worsened due to the past two decades, which has been supported by never-ending droughts. This has caused water resources, like ponds, lakes, streams, and wells to become severely shallow, which all serve as the main sources of water that is collected by many households daily. Due to these shallow water sources, Ethiopians must travel far distances to fetch not even half of their daily water needs.

Living outside of the cities in the country, basically means that you are facing a water struggle and do not have your basic needs, nor rights met. People living in rural areas around or far away from the cities must often make use of contaminated water, which leads to more diseases amongst residents. With the influence of countless cases of illnesses, which includes cholera and diarrhea, children under the age of 5 struggle to survive. Those who do survive, face tremendous troubles growing up and due to poverty and poor circumstances, leads to a shocking number of only 45% of children ever receiving an education in Ethiopia. This contributes to even more poverty, adding to problems that the government has persisted to fail solving.
