Life Lessons from WaterWater covers 71% of the Earth’s surface and comprises around 70% of your body-weight. Water is produced as a by-product of star formation and is vital for all known forms of life.

Of the 71% of water that covers the Earth’s surface, 96.5% is in our seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Greenland and Antarctica, and around 0.001% in the air as vapour, clouds, and precipitation. A mere 2.5% of this water is freshwater.

The water that is in the human body is in every organ, and is distributed around the human body in constant percentages:

  • Human bones – 31% water;

  • Human brain – 85% water;

  • Human heart – 73% water;

  • The skin – 64% water;

  • Muscles – 79% water; and

  • Kidneys – 79% water.

Earth’s water continually moves through a water-cycle of evaporation and transpiration, condensation, precipitation and runoff, generally ending up in the sea.

Water is the only substance that appears in nature in all three common states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas); it can take various forms on Earth: water vapour and clouds in the sky, seawater in the oceans, icebergs in the polar oceans, glaciers in the mountains, fresh and salt water lakes, rivers, and aquifers in the ground.

Water is tasteless and odourless, is transparent in the visible electromagnetic spectrum, is often referred to as the universal solvent, has a low electrical conductivity, and is capable of being mixed with most liquids.

One of the most fundamental life-lessons that we can learn from water is that sometimes in life we need to just go with the flow. Take for instance the case of a man who went ‘river boarding’ for the first time ever, thinking that he needed to use his own abilities to get him through, then soon realised that things went better for him the minute he stopped struggling against the water and just went with the flow. The path opened up before him and his experience was instantly transformed and the experience ultimately delivered a greater path of possibility than he could ever have imagined.

Sometimes in life we just need to let go and let nature takes its course…
