While it’s difficult to establish whether a marine species are endangered, with many studies and the help of experts, many marine animals have been listed as critically endangered, and some extremely close to extinction.

Most marine species are either endangered or become extinct, because of fishing, predators and one of the most common causes, due to pollution.

Although these animals are protected from both environmental and governmental agencies, fishermen still take advantage of their rights to fish and violate rules to protect them.

#1 The Blue Whale

As the largest living mammal on earth, with 100 feet in length and weighing in at 200 tonnes, the blue whales are vital for maintaining the health of the marine environment.

Dye to excessive commercial hunting, the population of this species has decreased and are endangered to become extinct, with only 10,000 – 25,000 whales left.

#2 Stellar Sea Lion

Located in the cold coastal waters of the North Pacific Ocean, the Stellar Seal is at risk of becoming extinct, due to an increase in Killer Whales hunting, as well as Alaskans and Canadians that hunt them for their oil and meat. Also known as the northern sea lion, its population has declined with over 60% in the last six decades, which places them at high risk of becoming extinct.

#3 The Hammerhead Shark

While a whale might seem more important to save than a shark to most people, the Hammerhead shark is a unique-looking shark that often gets hunted for its fin. When the sharks get caught by fishermen, they get dragged aboard on their boats and get their fins cut off while they’re still breathing. The Asian market is responsible for the illegal harvest of shark fins, which pose a great danger for the endangerment of these magnificent species.
