Currently, up to a quarter of the world’s population are facing high levels of water shortages, some of which also includes severe water scarcity to the point where countries are seeking help from organizations for solutions and relief.
Seventeen countries are reportedly using over 80% of their water supply annually, which, given that the demand for water in the world, is just getting worse. In countries where water crisis once seemed like an unthinkable occurrence, is now a reality.
In 2018, Cape Town managed to bounce back from completely running out of water to finally gaining relief in 2019 and recovering its dams. Nearing the end of winter months, Western Cape’s dams were up to 84% full, which excited residents and brought relief to the entire country.
However, even though Cape Town managed to bounce back from its excessive water stress, Chennai, the sixth-largest city in India, is now experiencing the same set of problems, almost running completely out of water.
Why Do Cities Near the Point of Running Out of Water Completely?
It’s quite strange to think that governments fail to act when it comes to putting a stop to water scarcity issues before it gets to the point of no return.
Governments who don’t have the finances to take proper measures, are still understandable, but those who do, are expected to derive plans to sustain any trouble they may experience with water scarcity in their cities. Whether it’s implementing excessive measures to restrict water supply, urging residents to not waste water, or finding technologically enhanced methods, like desalination, to find sustainable methods to provide proper water supply to cities, action is necessary.
Since water isn’t just something, we drink to survive but is also needed for other water-dependent processes, including for agriculture, health purposes, and to sustain nature, it’s extremely important to pay more attention to how water crisis’ can be solved.
