Starting the “day zero” trend back in 2018, Cape Town has luckily managed to rid itself from a potential day zero, but unfortunately, there are many more countries experiencing the potential fate that Cape Town once did.

Although Cape Town has recovered, there are many more countries that need are facing similar.

The United Arab Emirates is currently the 10th most water-scarce city in the world, with New Mexico joining it with the same set of circumstances and issues that needs to be addressed.

Even regions in the U.S., including California, Nebraska, Colorado, and Arizona are facing severe water stress. Since water stress can cause complete havoc in countries, researchers are predicting that increased global warming will bring upon more countries facing issues related to water scarcity in the future.

The Details – Countries in Trouble Facing Water Scarcity

The fact that the United Arab Emirates and New Mexico are on the same level of both making it to the 10th spot as the world’s most water-scarce countries, merely means that municipalities and several public industries are using up 95% of its annual water supply, which is really bad.

It also indicates that there are next to no water left in reserves to supplement possible droughts that may occur throughout the year.

Since populations and economies continue to grow and demand more water from their governments, paired with increased pollution, increased water waste, and the sun impacting the world more severely than ever before, there is much to be done to rectify the allocation of water usage in countries.

Since water stress also leads to other issues, such as epidemics and illness, lack of food supply, and derail a country’s economy, it is something that must be addressed immediately all around the world.

Water-stressed countries are urged to follow Cape Town’s example and reduce water usage in their countries.
