Is Water An Essential Part of Life?“Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink.” How many times have you heard or thought of that quote? If that was so, which some contend it may be in the next fifty years or so, the human race would be in very big trouble. Water is an essential part of life and without it we would die within a matter of days.

The human body is made up of between 55% and 75% water, depending on your gender and age, and because our bodies do not store water but actually lose it continuously, we must drink water regularly in order to remain hydrated. Hydrated mean that we are keeping the balance of our body fluids to where it should be.

I learned about 12 years ago when a family member had a stroke just how important water is to the brain and learning, through a visit to a Kinesiologist. When one has suffered a stroke, one’s brain needs to create new neural pathways so that it can learn new ways of doing the things that it has been doing your whole life all over again because that part of the brain has died.

There are many scientific research studies that support the belief that water plays a huge role in learning, and that when the brain is properly hydrated it will think faster, focus better, and remember more clearly, with a greater level of creativity and clarity.

This taught me that water is vital for children, especially with all the demands that are made on them to learn, do sports, study, and the various extra-mural activities in which they take part.  Various studies also reported that when water coolers were placed in some schools to records the effect that drinking water more regularly would have on children, they showed that children who drank water more regularly performed far better in all spheres and got ill less often.

Water – an Essential Part of Life

Water is also an essential part of life because every single cell in our body needs water to grow and function. Water keeps the muscles working properly, it keeps the brain working optimally, it keeps the skin plump and younger looking and it keeps the spinal column and joints cushioned.

Water helps us to digest our food and pass what is not required via urination and the colon; it keeps our mucous membranes moist, keeps our blood at the correct viscosity so that it can easily pass through the veins to every corner of our body, keeps our core temperature regulated, and much, much more.

Plainly put, without water we can only survive around three days after which we will descend into a coma and die.
