The United Nations secretary-general has issued a request, warning about a dangerous threat of pandemic that is currently moving across the planet and killing close to 80 million people.
A Threat Set to Spread Fast
This threat is a deadly pathogen, which is spread airborne globally. It is predicted that it could initially wipe out up to 5% of the world’s economy. The worst thing of all is that nobody is ready to face or treat it.
The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB), has compiled the information about the pandemic in response to the request from the U.N. secretary-general’s offices, along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank. The Norwegian Prime Minister, Gro Harlem Brundtland and head of the International Red Cross, Elhadj As Sy, were also brought in to help with the compiling of information. These parties have commissioned studied, and in doing so, has also issued a scathing attack on the financial, political, as well as the logistical state of affairs regarding pandemic preparedness.
At the moment, world leaders and organizations only respond to health crises as soon as they fear, and panic is strong enough or starts to grow fast. The majority of countries lack the consistency of devoting the energy and resources required to prevent outbreaks from turning into mass illness and disasters.
Since many political leaders, multinational institutions, and financial enterprises have failed to respond to the potential pandemic in the air. Reports regarding the pandemic have been sent to many countries, which have failed to respond or prepare for it.
The pandemic is predicted to be a killer influenza, which may develop into something worse, as it is derived from an unknown microbe. It is hoped that the issue of more reports and urges, possibly the outbreak itself, will force global leaders to take future microscopic threats seriously.
