Part of saving water includes ensuring that the water that goes into your drains or sewerage systems does not cause havoc by blocking up the sewers. This can easily happen, especially during the festive season when we all eat too much, and when most of what we eat contains a lot of fat.

When plates and pots are not cleared off properly before washing, it results in a lot of fatty deposits such as turkey dripping, pork fat, gravy and other leftover food remains finding their way into the drains via the sink.

The problem with this is that these fats do not break down in the sewers; they get attached to other waste, they cling to the sides of the waste pipes, and cause build-ups in the pipes and drainage systems that eventually end up creating blockages that can create havoc in the system as well as in the home.

A simple way to resolve this problem is to ensure that you allow the fats on your plates, serving dishes and pots and pans to cool and solidify then to wipe them off with a piece of paper towel which can then be discarded in the rubbish bin.

Every year water companies spend millions to unblock sewers, and many of the blockages are caused by household substances like fat, oil and grease. We need to think more about what we put into our drains if we want our water pipes and sewerage systems to function properly and cost less in maintenance, which directly impacts the costs of our drinking water and waste services.

If you do not want flooding in your home over the festive season, caused by a build-up of fatty deposits in the drains, pay heed and take steps to ensure that you do the right thing.
