Just How Good is Purified Water? While drinking water is vital in order to keep our bodies hydrated and in good health, it is also important that the water that we drink is pure and will not cause other health problems.

Dehydration can cause dry mouth, headaches, flushed skin, thirst, dark coloured urine, chills, fatigue, increased heart rate, rapid pulse, dizziness, muscle cramps, respiratory depression, dim vision, neuromuscular seizures, temporary blindness, and even coma and death.

Drinking water that is free of any pollution or other toxins is important for our good health and two ways of doing this is by filtering or purifying your drinking water. Purifying drinking water is generally done via one of three methods:

Drinking water can be purified by either using purification tablets or a pump purifier; another method is to boil the water before drinking it. Unfortunately this method is not the best as it does not always remove all the contaminants; some of these methods can also leave the water tasting less than good.

Another method of purification is via reverse osmosis (R.O.), which has proven to be a very good method of purification, but once again this method does not remove all contaminants; dangerous contaminants such as volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), chlorine and chloramines, pharmaceutical drugs and many other synthetic chemicals are left behind.

Filtering water is done via absorption, particulate filtration, carbon, activated carbon, and kinetic degradation fluxion (KDF).

While purifying water is probably the best option when camping or during a crisis such as a flood, earthquake or other natural catastrophe, it is not the best option long-term.

Various studies have shown that filtered water is best, as filtering removes all the toxins and pollutants but does not remove the minerals the water contains and which the human body needs; filtered and distilled water strips the minerals from the water. The World Health Organization (WHO) has done various studies that show that drinking demineralised water can cause various health problems.
