Quick Rundown of Interesting Water NewsThere is so much going on all over the world when it comes to water that we never get to hear about. It is important that we know what is being done and what is not being done to save water and what is being done to provide us with clean drinking water because it is our health that we are talking about.

The U.S. Army, in partnership with Cambrian Innovation, is developing a self-powered water treatment system, the BioVolt wastewater treatment system. This system makes use of newly-discovered, energy-generating biological processes to treat wastewater without the need for any electrical input from the grid for aeration. This is an important project that we should all keep an eye on because the fact that the system is mobile, containerised, and scalable means that it can be used in various conditions, especially at off-grid locations as well as in emergency situations where fresh drinking water is a problem.

Stanford University has developed a new computer algorithm that makes use of satellite data from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar, developed by NASA in the 1980s, to determine groundwater levels over far larger areas than was ever possible before. While this algorithm was originally compiled to collect data on earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides, Stanford researchers have adapted it for use in groundwater monitoring and have recently monitored groundwater levels in the 4,000 square kilometres that make up the agricultural basin of Colorado’s San Luis Valley. Groundwater levels are important to us in that most of our drinking water comes from groundwater and we need to ensure that the levels are not too depleted.

Worries regarding the quality of the drinking water during the upcoming Olympic Summer Games in Rio seem to be warranted, as even though basic sanitation is being expanded nearby, those in the know reckon that Rio’s water won’t be clean until 2035. This is not good news for the thousands of competitors and spectators that will be streaming to Rio, and we can just hope that there will not be an outbreak of water-related illness during the Games.
