With tourists from all around the world flooding to the biggest coral reef in the world, The Great Barrier Reef, some are forgetting about the other major reefs in the world, or perhaps didn’t even know they existed.

It is no doubt that the 2,500 km long Great Barrier Reef, with the size of 384,000 square km’s, is considered the top of all coral reefs, but what else is out there and why are they so underrated? Quite the rhetorical question, to say the least.

What else is out there?

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

As a connected barrier reef, covering a total of 943 km, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef spans through Mexico, Honduras, Belize, as well as Guatemala. This reef is considered a beautiful mystery with nearly 90% of its species remaining undiscovered. This reef is a masterpiece, or rather a gold mine, for marine biologists and scientists.

The New Caledonia Barrier Reef

Spanning over 1,500 kilometres in length in New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean, this is one reef that has one human-impacted sad story. Due to the country’s illegal nickel mining, much of the reef has been destroyed, leaving only a partial part of it left for the world to enjoy.

The Red Sea Coral Reef

Sounds quite interesting, doesn’t it?

Situated between Africa and Asia, this coral reef is a gem. It is over 1,900 kilometres in size and can be found right next to Israel, Djibouti and Egypt. This reef is considered to be one of the best-structured reefs as it has one of the most efficient circulation patterns.

Andros Coral Reef

Situated in the beautiful islands of the Bahamas between Andros and Nassau, this coral reef is a must-see. It covers up to 6,000 square meters and boasts the most amazing sea life one could ever imagine.

Saya De Malha

It is no joke that this coral reef imitates an image that looks like some sort of UFO, which makes it all more exciting to visit. It is located in the Indian Ocean which has the biggest atoll on the globe-spanning over 40,000 square meters in kilometres. It falls under the authority of Mauritius and is a natural habitat for the breeding of blue whales. Another spectacular must-see.
