The ocean has been known as the water surface area that covers most of the planet, but just how much more do you know about the ocean. While people might think of the names ‘Atlantic’ or ‘Pacific’ as names commonly used to describe certain areas of the ocean, there are in fact five different areas of which the entire ocean is divided into.

Water also makes up about 70% of the planets entire surface, of which a total of 96% is considered to be salty sea water. When you look at an image from earth, it displays that there are masses of water that perfectly border the continents and even though all five oceans are linked with one another, they are categorized for different regions. These oceans are also divided based on distinctive features.

These include the well-known Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Antarctic Ocean, as well as the Arctic Ocean.

Pacific Ocean

Considered to be the largest ocean of all, the Pacific Ocean extends over 162.200,00 square kilometres and also has the longest shoreline of up to 135,663 kilometres. It can be found between the eastern coastlines of both Africa and Asia, as well as the western coastlines of America. It includes the southern part of the Antarctic Ocean and the northern part of the Arctic Ocean.

Atlantic Ocean

Known as the second largest ocean in the world, covering an area of 106,400,00 square kilometres, this beautiful ocean is surrounded by Africa and Europe, as well as the east and west of America. It is made up of the Caribbean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Baltic Sea.

Indian Ocean

As the third largest ocean, the Indian Ocean covers about 73,556,000 square kilometres. It is surrounded by the eastern coasts of Africa and the shores of the Middle East, as well as India. South East Asia and Australia separate the Indian Ocean from the Pacific. This part of the ocean serves as a habitat for scores of unique and exotic species.

Antarctic Ocean

The 4th largest ocean on earth covers up to 20,327,000 square kilometres and is known as the Southern Ocean, situated next to the South Pole. This ocean is known for having a massive impact on the earth’s weather patterns and joins the Indian, Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean with its easterly current. There are also tons of species to be found in this ocean due to its endless supply of phytoplankton which serves as the ideal source of food for most sea life.

Arctic Ocean

Known as the smallest, lesser-known and shallowest ocean of all, covering the area of only 13,986,000 square kilometres, the Arctic Ocean can be found in the Arctic Circle. It is bordered by the Eurasian and North American continents and is covered with mountains of ice. One cannon pass through the Arctic during most of the summer.
