New Device Capable of Producing Drinking Water in the Desert 75 year-old Spanish engineer and inventor, Enrique Veiga, has come up with a brilliant invention; a machine that condenses water from the atmosphere into filtered drinking water. Now this is really the type of invention that the world drastically needs at the moment with so many countries experiencing ever-increasing droughts and water shortages.

According to Veiga, who is a refrigeration engineer from Seville, Spain, the mechanism that he has developed actually extracts moisture from thin air and transforms it into water. Veiga says that he has been working on this invention for the past twenty years, and first patented it in 1995 when Spain was experiencing a really bad drought.

Apparently there is more than 16 grams of water per kilogram of air at 30 degrees Celsius and with 60% humidity, and when the air temperature is lowered below the dew point, condensation is created and water is collected. He discovered that by moving more or less air, even in the desert they can obtain the desired amount of water.

The prototype of the current machine is capable of producing 3,000 litres of drinking water per day, even in the driest desert, and only uses the same amount of electricity as a domestic washing machine to autonomously create fresh great tasting drinking water.

This is great news as it means that individuals in water scarce areas will be able to create drinkable water free of contaminants, even those caught up in natural disaster areas or refugee camps. Thanks to filters that have been incorporated into the device, the water can be stored somewhere ready for consumption by whoever needs it, when it is needed.

The machine does not create any pollution; the cost of creating water is directly related to the cost of energy, and the device can also be utilised to generate a water supply for small domestic consumption.

Aquaer Generators in Seville owns the patent for this incredible machine, and already has 1,500 units on order from the government of Namibia, which is a desert country that currently has a serious drought problem.

This is definitely the type of innovative designing that the world needs now, and hopefully it will improve the life of millions across the globe as well as get more inventors thinking outside the box to resolve the global water shortages.
