Residential areas with low-income communities in the U.S have always suffered from a lack of water, but up until 2018, has worsened more than ever before.

It’s hard to believe that a country that’s known for its riches and everything that’s great, has rural areas with just as many problems as some countries all around the world, including Africa and the Middle East.

One of the states, Kentucky, has been one country recently highlighted for its lack of clean water. Some residents in the country, have experienced safety issues with their water for up to 25-years, all due to chemicals and disinfectants being added to the chemicals.

These issues have arisen from old infrastructures and due to these rural regions poor financial situation, cannot afford to fix it.

If you think about the water crisis, one’s mind generally levitates to cities like Michigan or Cape Town, South Africa, but it’s only because these attract the most attention. There are many cities, states and even countries, that are experiencing a similar water crisis’.

Rural America’s Drinking-Water Crisis and Human Rights

Since having access to clean drinking water is a human right, as well as sanitation, it’s hard to believe that these are still the issues not only the third-world countries get to face, but also first-world countries, who are thought to have all the money in the world.

Rural America’s water crisis is a lot bigger than the world thinks. In fact, some of the worst problems in the U.S. ranges from Kentucky, all the way to Texas, who houses millions of rural Americans that are exposed to unhealthy and illegal levels of contaminants of drinking water. These water contaminants mainly occur due to agriculture, coal, or even old pipes.

It’s a nice idea to think that the U.S. is perfect and hardly experience the problems the rest of the world does today, but perhaps the U.S. is just better at hiding it than the rest of the world is.

If having clean water is a human right, then where is the money that’s supposed to support this problem and provide a solution for it. Perhaps America is viewed as great because there’s only a certain part that gets shown to the world after all.
